FAQs
Q: I’m worried about starting my child on medication. Are there other options?
A: I approach the decision about whether to start a child on medication very carefully. Not every child experiencing emotional or behavioral issues requires medication. By the time a parent seeks out the help of a child psychiatrist, it is common for the child to have already received other treatments with limited improvement in their symptoms or behaviors. We will discuss your child’s prior and current treatments during the initial appointment. If there are things that are working, those can often be continued. If we do decide to start medication, we will do so slowly, watching how your child responds and keeping an eye out for any unwanted effects. If those arise, we will make adjustments to medications and dosing until we find the treatment regimen that works best for your child.
Q: Do you perform talk therapy?
A: Psychotherapy or “talk therapy” is often an important component of an effective treatment plan. I have received training in the various therapeutic modalities, but my area of expertise is in medication management. I will recommend a therapist if I think psychotherapy might also be helpful. If your child already has a therapist and you are happy with the progress they are making together, you can usually continue with them during your child’s treatment. I enjoy working collaboratively with other clinicians.
Q: Do you take insurance?
A: I am an “out-of-network” provider and do not participate in any insurance plans, but you can use pre-existing HSA/FSA funds to help cover the cost of services. Upon request, I can also provide a detailed statement (“superbill”) documenting services, diagnostic codes, and payments. This documentation can be submitted by you to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
Q: How do I make an appointment?
A: Please call or text (408) 539-7899 to schedule an appointment. Calls and texts are generally returned within 24 hours on weekdays, usually within the same business day.
Q: Can I text you with a question?
A: Yes! I use Spruce, an all-in-one HIPAA-compliant communication platform that allows you to securely send messages, photos, videos, and PDFs. New clients will receive an invitation link to download the Spruce app, which is the best way for us to communicate if you have a question or concern that you need to share prior to our next appointment.
Q: What if I need to change or cancel an appointment?
A: If you need to change or cancel an appointment for any reason, please let me know at least 48 hours prior to your child’s scheduled appointment. Missed appointments or appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice will be subject to a cancellation fee.
